Spending time in the sun is a MUST.
Good for your body, your mind, all your inner-workings…
Now that summertime’s here, it’s time for you to find the best, natural sunscreen for your face and body – especially since conventional sunscreens are terrible for our skin!
Why should you stop using conventional sunscreen?
Some studies show that using a conventional sunscreen may cause more issues (including skin cancer and sun spots) than it prevents.
In recent years, the safety of some ingredients (which are included in most sunscreens) have been found ‘not safe’ since the ingredients are absorbed into the body just after one use. These ingredients have been shown in studies to be endocrine-disruptors.
Not good.
The best type of sunscreen, ultimately, is a tan.
You are born with a natural sunscreen called pigment melanin.
Using artificial sunscreens when you’re outside messes with your own body’s natural way of dealing with the overexposure of sun.
To take total advantage of this pigment melanin you need to gradually expose yourself to the sun starting with 5 minutes of direct sunlight a day for one week, then slowly increase that time by 5 minutes each week after that.
Doing this consistently will eventually build you a base tan that allows you to stay in the sun longer without getting burned too quickly.
This book goes over the importance of getting direct sunlight as well as the dangers of using sunblock.
Next to having a nice tan, your second choice for sunscreen should be coconut oil – which we discuss more in another article here.
We should note, that if you do get a sunburn we recommend the following guidelines from the American Academy of Dermatology on “How to Treat Sunburn”
- Take frequent cool baths and/or showers to relieve pain.
- Use a moisturizer (coconut oil!) to soothe sunburned skin.
- Drink extra water to prevent dehydration.
Some people have claimed that cutting seed oils completely out of their diet helped them to spend more time in the sun without burning – that’s something we discuss more of in this article here.
To avoid a nasty sunburn though, the best thing you can do is gradually expose your skin to the sun to give your body its’ own built-in natural sunscreen, a tan!
And here’s a cheat sheet to get you the best natural sunscreen choice – a tan!
Have a great summer!
