When going gluten free the hardest part of the whole process is just finding the substitutes for what you CAN eat. It can feel overwhelming and defeating if you feel like you can’t eat anything that you used to.
Here are some ideas that you can use to make the transition easier.
1. Corn Tortilla
Everyone, I mean everyone, loves tacos. One of the first and easiest switches is just switching to corn tortillas when ordering tacos. You can even make mini cheese quesadillas with corn tortillas.
2. Lettuce Wrap Your Burger
Whether it’s making burgers at home or when you are out for a quick bite, wrapping your burger in lettuce is so easy and cuts at least 145 calories. It does make it a little messier to eat but it’s doable.
3. Cauliflower Crust For Pizza
This one might be hard to get on board with because there are so many styles of pizza but a cauliflower crust is mainly just a thin crust. You can’t really taste the cauliflower and many people (my husband included lol) actually enjoy these crusts.
4.Coconut Aminos
Whenever cooking at home making fried rice or any other soy sauce dish, exchange the soy sauce for coconut aminos. Soy sauce is high in sodium and made from soybeans and wheat. Two things you want to stay away from.
5. Sourdough Bread!
Sometimes you just NEEEEEED a sandwich. Surprisingly Organic sourdough bread is a great substitute for other breads. The gluten in it is broken down so it’s easier for the body to digest. You can also find some super easy recipes to make it at home and they are to die for.
6.Almond Flour
You can replace the flour for muffins, cookies or cakes with almond flour. Most of the time you need to add an extra egg to help the almond flour bind. Substituting almond flour adds protein and is an antioxidant with so many health benefits.
7. Chickpea Pasta
Chickpeas are a high source of protein, fiber, and I bet your family will never know the difference in the switch. This is a very easy switch because chickpea pasta comes in so many different forms. Just make sure that you buy organic!
8. Zucchini Noodles
They are so easy to make and most restaurants have the option of substituting regular noodles with zucchini noodles. This drops the calories and adds fiber to the meal so you can digest the meal better. Zucchini is also an antioxidant and has so many health benefits.
Once you get the hang of the first few months of going off gluten/wheat it does get easier, just stick with it. It soon will just be second nature to you and you’ll just avoid it without really thinking about it.
